Out Standing In His Field

My latest watercolor is a painting of my father-in-law Charles Spurgeon, standing in the corn field on his Marysville, Ohio farm.

Native

This painting, done as a watercolor collage demonstration, turned out to have a bit of a Native American flavor to it. Although I would never consciously have started out with these colors, so different from my regular palette, I kind of liked it when it was done and I had enhanced some areas with colored pencils.

Website

It may be paying off to have a website after all!
The only feedback I usually get from my website is in the form of phishing expeditions from scam artists posing as buyers and pretending to be interested in buying three of my paintings (always three) and having them shipped to their new home in South Africa (always a new home in Africa), if I would only tell them the cost of the paintings and freight, and how much I would give them as a discount. We've all heard that song before!
But last week I actually received a genuine exhibition opportunity. I was invited to show work in the 28th Annual Immaculata University Art Show. Unbeknownst to me, the exhibition committee had juried me in by viewing the work on my website. They asked me specifically to show my abstract work.
Maybe I better start painting again!

Odd Man Out

My watercolor painting "Odd Man Out" was accepted for publication in Splash 12: Celebrating Artistic Vision. It is based on my daughter's clown doll collection. The plain doll on the right inspired me to position him so that the more fanciful dolls on the left appear to push him out of the picture. (Maybe a sad comment on the tendency in our society to reject those that aren't exactly like ourselves.) Splash 12, to be published by North Light Books, will be available in May, 2011.

Phoenix

"Phoenix," a watercolor collage, won Best of Show at the Greater Norristown Art League Open Juried Exhibition in May, 2010.

Abstracts

I have finally entered the world of abstract expression. Quite a departure from my representational renderings of plant life. The medium is watercolor collage accented with colored pencils.
